How Do I Know If I Need More Attic Insulation?

#1) If you can see the beams on the floor of the attic, then you definitely need more insulation. See picture above.

#2) If the home doesn’t cool in the summer and/or stay warm in the winter.

#3) If the A/C seems to just run and run and run.

#4) Florida attics should have 12 to 16 inches of insulation (R30 to R38).

#5) Insulation should cover all beams on the floor of the attic. See picture below.

Can I Add New Insulation on Top of Old Insulation?

Yes! In most cases, it's perfectly fine to add new insulation on top of old insulation. However, there are certain circumstances that warrant removing the old insulation prior to installing your new insulation.

#1) If the insulation is really old or is original to the home. Insulation that has surpassed its lifespan looks crumbly, flat, dry-rotted, and/or it may look like dusty, dirt.

#2) Insulation starts to expire after 25 years and thus loses efficiency. You can lay new on top of this, but be advised that the expired insulation is taking up space where good, quality insulation could be, reducing the efficiency.

#3) Rodent or wildlife infestations - feces, urine, nesting materials in the insulation. Sadly, there's no way to clean around this contamination without first removing your insulation.

#4) Air quality - As previously mentioned, old, dirty, flat insulation that's been around for decades typically becomes crumbly, dusty, and this greatly affects air quality. Home may be dusty or have a musty, old house smell.

#5) Water damage - Any insulation that has gotten wet needs to be removed. The heat of the attic combined with moisture creates mold and fungus. Also, insulation that gets wet is no longer effective in thermal regulation.

Any of the above situations require an attic restoration, also known as attic remediation or attic abatement. Which involves removing prior to installing new insulation. Please click here to learn more.

At Florida Attic Professionals, we're home owners too, so we understand the importance of finding the right contractor for your home project. Therefore, when shopping for attic insulation, we want you to make an informed decision, even if you don't choose us. Here are the most important topics to consider when shopping for insulation quotes from local insulation companies:

Type and Brand of Insulation:

  • We strongly recommend using blown-in fiberglass insulation, particularly white blown-in fiberglass.

  • White fiberglass provides outstanding energy efficiency and is recognized as the industry leader in air quality.

  • Steer clear of inexpensive insulation alternatives, often imported from China, which will compromise your home's air quality.

  • Opt for American-made brands that adhere to rigorous standards such as: fire ratings, moisture resistance, thermal efficiency, air quality, and more.

Our Preferred Insulation: CertainTeed - Insulsafe

  • Proudly made in the USA, this premium product ensures quality and performance.

  • It's Green Guard Gold Certified, which is the highest certification of its kind, guaranteeing superior air quality, which is better for your health and better for the environment.

  • Unlike the pink fiberglass of the past, white fiberglass does not itch! If you ever have to go into your attic, you won't get itchy.

  • White fiberglass looks and feels just like white cotton.

  • It also is low VOC, low dust, and formaldehyde-free for your peace of mind.

Recommended R-Value for Florida Attics:

  • In East Coast Florida and surrounding areas, it is recommend to have R30 to R38 (12 to 16 inches of blown-in fiberglass).

  • Too much insulation can suffocate your attic and lead to issues with moisture, fungus or mold.

  • Having too little attic insulation can allow heat to escape from your home during the winter, but more importantly it can allow your precious air conditioned air to escape through the roof and allow the hot air from outside to enter during the summer.

  • This can lead to higher utility bills and wear and tear on your air conditioner, as your heating and cooling systems work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature.

  • Insufficient insulation can also result in uncomfortable living conditions such as temperature imbalances that make your house too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer.

  • Moisture problems: Inadequate insulation can contribute to the formation of condensation and moisture buildup in your attic. This can lead to mold and mildew growth, which not only damages your home's structure but can also pose health risks to occupants.

  • Reduced lifespan of roofing materials: Without proper insulation, heat buildup in the attic can transfer to the roof, causing shingles to deteriorate more quickly. This can result in the need for premature roof repairs or replacement.

  • Increased environmental impact: Inefficient energy use due to inadequate insulation contributes to higher greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation.

  • To avoid these issues, it is important to have sufficient attic insulation to maintain energy efficiency, comfort, and the overall health of your home.

  • The great news is there are significant tax credits for upgrading your attic insulation this year! Get 30% of your insulation costs back on your tax return, up to $1200 max.

Tips for Avoiding Scammers:

  • Be wary of insulation companies offering prices too good to be true. These companies practice "fluffing".

  • Fluffing creates the appearance of the correct depth or R factor, by adding air into the machine as it blows.

  • Insulation installed without "fluffing" means it maintains its true R value, and won't settle. In other words, it has the proper density.

  • This is achieved by using the correct amount of bags per square foot as recommended by the manufacturer, hence the price differences.

Competitive Pricing:

  • Professional insulation contractors have prices that align with the industry standard because they have the proper training, tools, machines, experience, insurance such as general liability and workman's comp, and they use quality materials to get the job done correctly.

  • According to HomeAdvisor, the average price for blown in attic insulation including installation ranges from $1.30 to $1.70 per square foot for R30.

Trusted and Experienced - Proven Reputation:

  • Look for established companies with positive customer reviews going back multiple years.
  • Shady contractors may only have a year or two of review history as their bad reviews taint their reputation and so they open new companies with different names.
  • Experience matters when dealing with the complexity of attic work in Florida.

FRESHLY RESTORED ATTIC

We offer attic restoration services to all of Vero, Cocoa, Melbourne, Titusville and surrounding areas. Also known as attic abatement or attic remediation, attic restoration is for homes that need old insulation removed, the attic vacuumed, sanitized, and new insulation installed. Here are a few situations that may require an attic remediation:

  • Older homes: Insulation typically begins to degrade after 25 to 30 years. When insulation reaches the end of its lifespan, it becomes ineffective, dry, crumbly, and can release airborne particles, which can lower your home's air quality and contribute to dust buildup. Additionally, aged insulation occupies valuable space that could be filled with effective insulation, reducing its ability to regulate your home's temperature efficiently. This forces your air conditioning system to work harder to maintain desired temperatures, leading to increased energy bills and potentially shortening the lifespan of your HVAC equipment.

  • Rat infestations in the attic: Rodents are attracted to attics for nesting, leaving behind droppings, urine, and an unpleasant odor. This not only poses a significant air quality issue but also creates a potential health hazard for homeowners. The presence of rodent waste can introduce allergens and pathogens into the air, exacerbating respiratory problems and other health issues for residents. Moreover, addressing rodent infestations promptly is crucial to prevent structural damage to insulation and other materials in the attic, ensuring both the safety of the home and the well-being of its occupants.

  • Water damage or condensation in the attic: Roof leaks, condensation, or excessive moisture in the attic can damage insulation and promote mold or fungus growth. This moisture buildup not only compromises the effectiveness of insulation but also poses health risks due to mold spores circulating in the air. Addressing condensation issues may involve ensuring proper ventilation and managing insulation levels appropriately to prevent moisture accumulation. Sometimes an attic can be over insulated and this can attribute to condensation and moisture in the attic. Florida attics need 12 to 16 inches of insulation. Anything more causes more harm than good.

  • Hearing strange noises in your attic? Unwelcome visitors moving into your attic? Attic restorations become necessary following wildlife infestations by critters like raccoons, squirrels, bats, or possums. Despite their cute appearances, these animals can wreak havoc by tearing apart insulation, bringing in debris for nests, and leaving behind feces and urine throughout the attic. Their presence not only creates a mess but also poses health risks as their droppings may harbor dangerous bacteria. For instance, bat guano is known to carry histoplasmosis, a respiratory disease, while raccoons can carry Baylisascaris procyonis, a roundworm that can be harmful to humans if ingested. Effective removal and sanitation are crucial to ensure a safe and hygienic living environment in your home. Additionally, sealing entry points will prevent future wildlife intrusions, preserving both the integrity of your attic and the well-being of your household.

  • Unexplained Health Issues: Are you feeling unwell in your own home? If you notice symptoms improve when you're away, it could indicate compromised air quality in your attic. Factors like aged, dusty, or contaminated insulation, along with moisture or mold issues, can significantly impact your health. Insulation treated with chemicals like boric acid or pesticides may also contribute to these problems. These issues can lead to respiratory discomfort, allergic reactions, and exacerbate conditions such as asthma. If you're experiencing unexplained health issues and suspect your home's air quality is a factor, reach out to us for a complimentary consultation. We've successfully helped numerous homeowners by identifying and addressing insulation and air quality issues, restoring peace of mind and creating healthier living environments. Don't compromise on your health—take proactive steps to ensure the air you breathe at home is safe and clean.

dirty attic.jpg
raccoon poop im attic.jpg

At our company, we specialize in the thorough removal of old and dirty insulation from Brevard County homes. In addition to insulation removal, we also replace old insulation with new, high-quality materials.

Homeowners may need to remove their attic insulation for various reasons, one of the most common being rodent infestations. Rats and other rodents contaminate attics with feces, urine, and nesting materials, significantly damaging insulation by tunneling through it. Other culprits include raccoons, squirrels, possums, bats, and insects. We have the expertise and equipment necessary to handle any rodent and wildlife problems in your attic efficiently and safely.

Another reason for attic insulation removal is the natural degradation over time. Insulation can become crumbly, dusty, flat, and so old that it loses its effectiveness and can even become airborne, posing health risks. This makes insulation removal and replacement a necessity for older homes. It is generally recommended to replace attic insulation after 25 years to ensure it remains effective.

Signs that your insulation needs to be replaced include struggling air conditioning systems, high electric bills, constant dust accumulation, or health issues that seem linked to your attic environment. These problems often indicate that your insulation is old, contaminated, or ineffective.

Once we remove the outdated insulation, we offer blown-in fiberglass insulation as a replacement. Call us today at 863-777-0210 for a fast and free estimate for your attic insulation removal project.

Rodent Droppings in Attic.jpg
attic smell.jpg

We're one of few companies in the entire state of Florida that offers true attic cleaning. Most attic insulation companies do not remove attic insulation or clean out attics, but we go above and beyond by providing attic cleaning services, attic clean-outs, rodent feces clean up, raccoon poop removal, bat guano removal, and many other nasty, dirty situations that require attic cleaning. Please note: We cannot clean attics without removing your old insulation. However, we can clean attics that do not currently have insulation and we can clean attics with insulation, but this involves everything being removed from the attic. In other words, it's impossible to spot clean an attic that has insulation. To truly clean your attic, the old insulation will need to be removed or if you currently do not have insulation in the attic, we can clean it.

Please beware of a new scam. There are companies going around using a shop vac and/or a rake to clean attics. They attempt to convince the home owner that this method is sufficient to get the job done. These methods do not work and are simply used to "put on a show". The scammers clean the area of the attic where you will pop your head up to look around and leave the rest of the attic dirty, where they know you won't climb to look. If you attempt to inspect their work they will adamantly insist that you do not go into the attic as it is an insurance liabilty for their company. All of this is untrue. We've seen this time and time again and we've had to help several customers after they've been scammed. Attic insulation professionals use industrial insulation vaccuums, which are the correct tools to restore and clean attics. Call 863-777-0210 for more information.
