How Do I Know If I Need More Attic Insulation?

#1) If you can see the beams on the floor of the attic, then you definitely need more insulation. See picture above.

#2) If the home doesn’t cool in the summer and/or stay warm in the winter.

#3) If the A/C seems to just run and run and run.

#4) Orlando attics should have 12 to 16 inches of insulation (R30 to R38).

#5) Insulation should cover all beams on the floor of the attic. See picture below.

Can I Add New Insulation on Top of Old Insulation?

Yes! In most cases, it's perfectly fine to add new insulation on top of old insulation. However, there are certain circumstances that warrant removing the old insulation prior to installing your new insulation.

#1) If the insulation is really old or is original to the home. Insulation that has surpassed its lifespan looks crumbly, flat, dry-rotted, and/or it may look like dusty, dirt.

#2) Insulation starts to expire after 25 years and thus loses efficiency. You can lay new on top of this, but be advised that the expired insulation is taking up space where good, quality insulation could be, reducing the efficiency.

#3) Rodent or wildlife infestations - feces, urine, nesting materials in the insulation. Sadly, there's no way to clean around this contamination without first removing your insulation.

#4) Air quality - As previously mentioned, old, dirty, flat insulation that's been around for decades typically becomes crumbly, dusty, and this greatly affects air quality. Home may be dusty or have a musty, old house smell.

#5) Water damage - Any insulation that has gotten wet needs to be removed. The heat of the attic combined with moisture creates mold and fungus. Also, insulation that gets wet is no longer effective in thermal regulation.

Any of the above situations require an attic restoration, also known as attic remediation or attic abatement. Which involves removing prior to installing new insulation. Please click here to learn more.

At Florida Attic Professionals, we're home owners too, so we understand the importance of finding the right contractor for your home project. Therefore, when shopping for attic insulation, we want you to make an informed decision, even if you don't choose us. Here are the most important topics to consider when researching local insulation companies:

  1. Type and Brand of Insulation:

    • Our professional recommendation is blown-in fiberglass insulation, more specifically, white blown in fiberglass.

    • White fiberglass offers exceptional energy efficiency and is ranked #1 in the industry for air quality.

    • Avoid cheap insulation options, as these are typically sourced from China, and they may compromise the air quality in your home.

    • Stick with American made brands, as they are held to high standards, such as fire ratings, moisture absorption, thermal resistance, air quality, and more.

  2. Our Preferred Insulation: CertainTeed - Insulsafe SP

    • Proudly made in the USA, this premium product ensures quality and performance.

    • It's Green Guard Gold Certified, guaranteeing superior air quality, which is better for your health and better for the environment.

    • Unlike the pink fiberglass of the past,  white fiberglass does not itch. It looks and feels just like white cotton.

    • Low VOC, low dust, and formaldehyde-free for your peace of mind.

  3. Recommended R-Value for Central Fl Attics:

    • In Orlando and surrounding areas, it is recommend to have R30 to R38 (12 to 16 inches of blown-in fiberglass).

    • Too much insulation can suffocate your attic and lead to issues with moisture, fungus or mold.

    • Having too little attic insulation can allow heat to escape from your home during the winter, but more importantly it can allow your precious air conditioned air to escape through the roof and allow the hot air from attic to enter during the summer.

    • This can lead to higher utility bills and wear and tear on your air conditioner, as your heating and cooling systems work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature.

    • Insufficient insulation can also result in uncomfortable living conditions such as temperature imbalances that make your house too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer.

    • Moisture problems: Inadequate insulation can contribute to the formation of condensation and moisture buildup in your attic. This can lead to mold and mildew growth, which not only damages your home's structure but can also pose health risks to occupants.

    • Reduced lifespan of roofing materials: Without proper insulation, heat buildup in the attic can transfer to the roof, causing shingles to deteriorate more quickly. This can result in the need for premature roof repairs or replacement.

    • Increased environmental impact: Inefficient energy use due to inadequate insulation contributes to higher greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation.

    • To avoid these issues, it is important to have sufficient attic insulation to maintain energy efficiency, comfort, and the overall health of your home.

    • The great news is there are significant tax credits for upgrading your attic insulation this year! Get 30% of your insulation costs back on your tax return, up to $1200 max.

  4. Industry Scammers Using Fluffing Techniques:

    • Be wary of insulation companies offering prices too good to be true. These companies practice "fluffing". Fluffing is a technique used by shady insulation companies.

    • Fluffing creates a false appearance of the correct insulation amount or R factor, by adding air into the machine as it blows.

    • Insulation installed without "fluffing" means it maintains its true R value, and won't settle because it has the proper density.

    • This is achieved by using the correct amount of bags per square foot as recommended by the manufacturer, hence the price differences.

    • Our expert technicians use industrial-strength insulation blowers for even and precise installation. Our machines are strong enough to reach every corner of your attic while still allowing optimal control to avoid insulation from going anywhere it shouldn't be such as into vents and soffits.

  5. Competitive Pricing:

    • Professional insulation contractors have prices that align with the industry standard because they have the proper training, tools, machines, experience, insurance, and quality materials to get the job done correctly.

    • According to HomeAdvisor, the average price for attic insulation including installation ranges from $1.30 to $1.70 per square foot for R30.

  6. Trusted Reputation:

    • Look for established companies with positive customer reviews going back years or across multiple platforms like Google, Angie's List, Facebook, and Yelp.
    • These platforms do not allow fake reviews, so you can trust the reviews.

FRESHLY RESTORED ATTIC

We offer attic restoration services to all of central Florida. Also known as attic abatement or attic remediation, attic restoration is for homes that need old insulation removed, the attic cleaned, disinfected, and new insulation installed. Attic restorations may be needed for a variety of reasons that relate directly to energy efficiency and/or air quality concerns. Here are a few examples of situations that may require an attic remediation:

  • Older homes: Insulation begins to expires around 25 to 30 years. Expired insulation is not only ineffective, but it becomes dry, crumbly, and airborne, lowering your home's air quality and creating dust in the home. As for energy efficiency, old insulation takes up space where good insulation should be, and this means your attic insulation is not working as well as it could be. This makes it more difficult for your AC to cool or warm the home, because conditioned air is escaping into the attic. This makes your air conditioner work harder, shortens its lifespan and increases electric bills.

  • Rat infestations in the attic: Rodents love nesting in attics, leaving droppings, urine, and a terrible smell. This can greatly affect the air quality in the home and create a health hazard for home owners.

  • Water damage in the attic: Roof leaks, condensation or moisture in the attic can ruin attic insulation and also creates mold or fungus growth. Some condensation problems are attributed to having too much attic insulation.W

  • Hearing strange noises in your attic? Unwanted guests moving in? Attic restorations are needed after wildlife infestations such as raccoons, squirrels, bats, or possums. These animals are cute but they're terrible house guests. They create a huge mess, shredding your insulation, pulling sticks and leaves into the attic to make nests, all while leaving feces and urine throughout your attic. Worst of all, some of these wild animals droppings carry dangerous bacteria. For example, bat guano carries histoplasmosis. And raccoons are the primary hosts of Baylisascaris procyonis, a roundworm that can be harmful to humans.

  • Unexplained health issues: Do you suspect your attic is making you sick? Do you feel sick when you're in your home and better when you're away from home? This is a sign that the air quality in your home has been compromised. Old, dusty insulation, contaminated insulation, wet or moldy insulation, and insulation that was treated with chemicals such as boric acid or pesticides have all been known to wreak havoc on the health of home owners. If you're suffering from unexplained health issues and you suspect your home's air quality may be to blame, contact us for a free consultation to discuss your unique situation. We have helped many home owner's correct their home's air quality and regain peace of mind.

Attic restoration and remediation requires specialized knowledge, skill, and experience. We're highly trained experts who have been dealing with Florida attic problems since 2008. Call 863-777-0210 to speak with an attic expert about your unique situation.

We specialize in removing old and dirty insulation from Florida homes. We also replace old insulation with new insulation. There are many reasons why home owners may need to remove their attic insulation. One reason is rodent infestations in the attic. Rats contaminate attics with feces, urine, and nesting materials. Rodents also tear up and damage attic insulation by tunneling. Other culprits of attic infestations are raccoons, squirrels, possums, bats, and bugs. We have the knowledge and equipment to handle any and all rodent and wildlife attic problems.

Another reason for needing attic insulation removed is when insulation becomes crumbly, dusty, flat, and so old that it becomes ineffective and possibly airborne, making insulation removal and replacement a necessity for older homes. Once a home's attic insulation hits 25 years, its time to remove and replace it.

Another sign is if your air conditioning seems to be struggling, if your electric bill is too high, or if your home appears to need constant dusting, or if you feel like your attic could be making you sick. These are all issues that signal a problem with old, contaminated, and/or ineffective insulation.
Once you get the old, ineffective insulation out of the attic, we offer blown-in fiberglass insulation, pull down attic ladder installation, attic flooring, and we can also inspect and seal off the attic from rodents and other wildlife like raccoons and squirrels. Call 863-777-0210 for more information.

Rodent Droppings in Attic.jpg
attic smell.jpg

We're one of few companies in the entire state of Florida that offers true attic cleaning. Most attic insulation companies do not remove attic insulation or clean out attics, but we go above and beyond by providing attic cleaning services, attic clean-outs, rodent feces clean up, raccoon poop removal, bat guano removal, and many other nasty, dirty situations that require attic cleaning. Please note: We cannot clean attics without removing your old insulation. However, we can clean attics that do not currently have insulation and we can clean attics with insulation, but this involves everything being removed from the attic. In other words, it's impossible to spot clean an attic that has insulation. To truly clean your attic, the old insulation will need to be removed or if you currently do not have insulation in the attic, we can clean it.

Please beware of a new scam. There are companies going around using a shop vac and/or a rake to clean attics. They attempt to convince the home owner that this method is sufficient to get the job done. These methods do not work and are simply used to "put on a show". The scammers clean the area of the attic where you will pop your head up to look around and leave the rest of the attic dirty, where they know you won't climb to look. If you attempt to inspect their work they will adamantly insist that you do not go into the attic as it is an insurance liabilty for their company. All of this is untrue. We've seen this time and time again and we've had to help several customers after they've been scammed. Attic insulation professionals use industrial insulation vaccuums, which are the correct tools to restore and clean attics. Call 863-777-0210 for more information.

attic ladder installed.jpg

We offer several options when it comes to attic ladder installation. We have a standard aluminum attic ladder, which is what you see in most homes, and we also have an upgraded aluminum attic ladder. Standard attic ladders come with a 22.5 x 54 inch opening, while the upgraded attic ladders have a wider opening at 25.5 inches x 54 inches. Upgrades are good for those wanting to use their attic space as a storage. The larger width on the opening allows for easier placement and removal of boxes and storage items. We also carry a third option, which a special order attic ladder made for ceiling heights over ten feet, four inches.

All of our ladders are aluminum, made in the USA, have a 375lbs weight capacity, handrails, and meet or exceed OSHA standards. Pricing for attic ladder installation includes the ladder, installation, any customizations necessary to fit your attic ladder, as well as trim and paint. The price also includes all labor and material necessary for the completion of the job. Attic ladder installation services take between 3-5 hours to complete. Even if you don't currently have an attic access or attic door, we can install an attic ladder in your home or business. Please give us a call at 863-777-0210 anywhere in Florida and we will be happy to give you a quote over the phone for your attic ladder installation project.
