Florida Homes Are Built for Attic Storage

Most Florida homes with garage attics are sitting on hundreds of square feet of unused storage potential. A storage conversion is the economical and convenient alternative to renting space across town:

Declutter your garage and closets.

Eliminate or avoid storage unit rentals. This project pays for itself in canceled monthly bills.

Create a safe walking platform instead of balancing on joists.

Keep your belongings on-site instead of driving across town to grab the holiday bins.

Store almost anything: holiday decor, seasonal items, sporting gear, paperwork, clothing, and more.

What we build

Flooring, Decking, and Full Conversions

We install loft flooring and attic decking sized to your space, and for homeowners who want more, our custom storage conversions make use of the vertical space too — racks, hooks, and shelving that turn a plywood platform into an organized storage room.

Save Money with Garage Attic Storage

Attic ladders and attic flooring offer an affordable way to unlock extra storage space, often saving thousands compared to renting a storage unit. Installations start at a 100 sq ft minimum and scale up based on attic layout, using thick, heavy-duty plywood that's sturdy enough to walk on and store heavy items; raised and reinforced to avoid pinching wires, cables, or pipes.

With Florida storage units averaging around $160/month (~$1,900/year), attic flooring is a one-time cost that pays for itself quickly versus recurring rental fees, while also boosting home value and serving as a strong selling point.

Maximize Your Attic Space

Take advantage of the extra space in your attic by finishing out the flooring, building out storage, or simply making sure it’s sealed off.

Common Attic Flooring Questions

  • Absolutely! Attics can provide ample storage space in Florida homes, but it's important to take several factors into consideration before using them for storage. On this page we'll explore everything you need to know about using your attic space for storage, such as the advantages and disadvantages of attic storage, and provide homeowners with tips for safely and effectively storing items in their attics.

  • Step 1 - Inspect Your Attic: Before storing items in your attic, it's important to inspect the space. You want to first ensure that you have room in your attic. Very low pitch attics are not ideal. Garage attics are the best option. Newer construction homes, homes with two or three car garages all make great storage spaces in the attic. Give us a call and we can take one look at your home’s construction style and let you know what potential your attic has for storage!

Step 2 - Look for any signs of damage or potential hazards: Check for leaks, cracks, or any signs of pests, and make any necessary repairs before storing items. If you've had pest issues in the past, we can help clean the area, disinfect, seal off entry points, and lay new insulation prior to your attic flooring installation. Please visit our attic restoration page to learn more.

Step 3 - Check to see if your attic space is insulated: All attics in Florida should have insulation, but even more so if you're using your attic for storage. Even garage attics should have insulation. You want at least 12 inches of depth for proper insulation of an attic storage. If you don't have insulation, we can install it on the day of your attic flooring installation. We will lay the flooring over your insulation, providing a nice insulated attic space for your belongings.

Step 4 - Install Attic Flooring: Contact us at 863-887-8443 anywhere in Florida to schedule attic flooring installation. We also have add on services, such attic storage shelves, attic insulation, attic disinfecting, and attic ladders.

Step 5 - Install an Attic Ladder: If you don't already have an attic ladder, consider getting one installed. We offer attic ladder and attic flooring services, and have discounts for bundling both services. We have standard aluminum attic ladders, and we even offer specialty attic ladders for tall ceiling heights up to 12 feet!

Step 6 - (Optional) Organize Your Attic Storage: Purchase air tight, color coded bins to store seasonal items, holiday items, and other personal belongings. Use light weight shelves and drawers to take advantage of vertical space, make sure you consider size and weight to ensure ease of getting items in and out of the attic. Create labels for bins and boxes. Use hooks, poles, and hangars.

  • We offer several convenient options for financing your attic project such as 90 days, 9 months or 12 months same as cash. We also have 24 months zero interest for larger projects. Please click here for more info.

What are some advantages to using the attic for storage?

Using the attic for storage can be a smart and convenient option for homeowners looking to free up space in other areas of the home. Here are some of the advantages to using the attic for storage:

    • Increased Storage Space: The attic is a great place to store items that are not frequently used, such as seasonal decorations, clothing, or sports equipment. By using the attic for storage, you can free up valuable space in other areas of the home, such as closets or the garage.

    • Reduced Clutter: Clutter can make a home feel crowded and disorganized. By moving items to the attic, you can create a cleaner living environment and reduce clutter in other areas of the home.

    • Protection from the Elements: Attics are typically dry and secure, which can provide a safe storage space for valuable items. By storing items in the attic, you can protect them from moisture, pests, and other potential hazards.

    • Easy Access: While attic access can sometimes be limited or difficult, having items stored in the attic can provide easy access when needed. This can be especially helpful for seasonal items, such as holiday decorations and seasonal items.

    • Cost Effective: Compared to other storage solutions, such as renting a storage unit, using the attic for storage is a cost-effective option. It allows homeowners to take advantage of existing space in their home, without having to pay additional fees.

In conclusion, attics can be a great storage solution for Florida homeowners, but it's important to take precautions to protect stored items from Florida's humid and pest-prone climate. Proper insulation and ventilation, airtight containers, avoiding storage of sensitive items, and distributing weight evenly are all essential to effective attic storage. By following these tips, you can make the most of your attic storage space and keep your belongings safe and secure.

    • Proper Insulation: Insulating your attic can help regulate temperature and humidity levels, which will protect stored items from damage.

    • Airtight Containers: Storing items in airtight containers will protect them from moisture, pests, and other potential hazards. Label containers clearly to make it easier to find items when needed.

    • Avoid Storing Sensitive Items: Avoid storing items that are sensitive to heat and humidity, such as electronics, photographs, or food items. These items should be stored in a cooler, drier area of the home.

    • Distribute Weight Evenly: Be mindful to distribute weight evenly. Our attic flooring is thick, heavy duty plywood that is raised and reinforced making it strong and sturdy enough to walk on and store heavy items, but even distribution of items is important.

    • Get Creative: We can also install custom built shelving in certain styles of attics. Once you have attic flooring, you can get creative with your attic space by installing hooks, hanging poles, lighting, rugs or carpeting for comfort, or use plastic drawers to store items vertically and help distribute weight more evenly.

  • Our attic flooring systems are designed for light household storage. To establish a safe and conservative storage guideline, we had a structural engineer calculate allowable loads using minimum Florida residential construction standards. Because these calculations are based on minimum construction standards, many homes may have framing capable of supporting greater loads; however, we use the more conservative standard rather than assuming a home's structure exceeds minimum requirements.

Based on these calculations, our guideline allows for approximately 833 pounds of evenly distributed storage per 100 square feet of attic flooring, with no more than 50 pounds concentrated within any 3 ft. × 2 ft. area. For example, two large storage bins weighing approximately 25 pounds each could be placed side by side within that area.

These limits are intended for typical household storage, not exceptionally heavy concentrated loads. Most items appropriate for attic storage, such as holiday decor and sporting equipment, naturally fall well below these limits, and extremely heavy objects are generally impractical to carry up an attic ladder in the first place.

Following these guidelines helps distribute stored weight appropriately and provides Florida homeowners with a practical, conservative standard for long-term attic storage.

  • Yes. While garage attic insulation is not necessary if your garage is not air conditioned, we still highly recommend that your attic storage space is insulated. This helps with overall energy efficiency of the home, as the garage attic and living area attic are connected.  You may also  want to consider doing this prior to the floors being laid so you won’t need to worry about insulating the area in the future should you ever decide to air condition your garage. We offer bundle packages for combining garage attic insulation, attic flooring and / or attic ladder installation services.

  • If you do not currently have insulation, we can install it prior to your flooring install. We can install R30 or R38 loose fill insulation into the garage and install R19 batts under the flooring. We then install cardboard baffles around the perimeter of the flooring to keep insulation in place. This provides the best coverage while maintaining a clean storage environment and avoids compressing the insulation.

  • All of our attic flooring is priced by the square foot. Prices include labor, material, tax on material, and everything necessary for the completion of the job, no surprises. Discounted rates for 200 square feet or more and multi-service discounts are offered for bundling services such as attic insulation, attic lifts, or attic ladder services. Please call or message us and we will be happy to work up a fast and free quote.

  • When it comes to the cost of attic flooring, consider the cost of renting a non-climate controlled 10x10 storage unit, which averages $150 a month in Florida. Attic flooring will pay for itself in under a year while also providing on-site, easily accessible storage space. It also provides a safe walking space and can be a nice selling point when you're ready to sell your home. All things considered, attic flooring is a worthwhile investment.
